If you are planning a Canary Islands holiday and struggling to choose between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, you are not alone. Both islands are enormously popular with British and European visitors, both offer year-round sunshine, and both pack a remarkable amount of variety into a relatively small area. But they are not the same, and the right choice depends entirely on what kind of holiday you want.

The Basics

Gran Canaria is the third-largest of the Canary Islands, with a population of around 850,000. Its capital, Las Palmas, sits in the north, while the main tourist resorts — Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, and Puerto Rico — are concentrated in the south.

Tenerife is the largest Canary Island and the most visited, with Mount Teide — Spain's highest peak — dominating the centre. Its main tourist areas are in the south and the north.

Beaches

Gran Canaria has a strong case. The Maspalomas dunes are genuinely spectacular — a natural reserve of golden sand dunes that back onto a broad, beautiful beach. Tenerife's natural beaches are generally darker, with volcanic black sand. If your priority is a classic golden sandy beach, Gran Canaria tends to win.

Verdict: Gran Canaria for natural golden beaches.

Resorts and Atmosphere

Gran Canaria's south coast resorts cater to a broad range of visitors, from families to young travellers to older couples. Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas have a large LGBTQ+ community and a lively nightlife strip. Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán are quieter and more family-friendly.

Tenerife's Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas have a more developed resort infrastructure, with larger hotels and a very strong family and package-holiday market.

Activities and Excursions

Both islands offer excellent activity programmes. Gran Canaria arguably has the edge on variety. The mountainous interior opens up genuinely rewarding hiking routes, the south coast is strong for water sports and boat trips. Tenerife's headline attraction is Mount Teide, which is world-class.

Family vs Couples

Both islands work well for families. Tenerife's Siam Park is widely regarded as one of the best water parks in Europe and is a major draw for families. For couples looking for a more atmospheric base, Puerto de Mogán on Gran Canaria is hard to beat.

Verdict: Tenerife edges ahead for families with Siam Park; Gran Canaria wins on romantic beach settings.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Gran Canaria if you want natural golden-sand beaches, a dramatic and varied landscape, a genuinely local capital city worth exploring, and a lively yet diverse resort atmosphere.

Choose Tenerife if Siam Park is a priority, you want to visit Mount Teide, or you prefer a wider range of large-hotel resort options on the south coast.
