Gran Canaria sits in the Atlantic, just 210 kilometres west of the Moroccan coast, which means it enjoys warm, settled weather all year round. But "all year round" does not mean every month is the same. Knowing when to go can be the difference between a peaceful holiday with perfect conditions and fighting for a sun lounger in the midday heat. This guide breaks it down month by month so you can pick the best time to visit Gran Canaria for what matters most to you.

Gran Canaria Weather: The Basics

The island earns its nickname, "the miniature continent," partly because of how dramatically the climate changes from south to north. The south — home to Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, and Puerto Rico — is dry and sunny almost all year. The north and interior are greener and considerably wetter. For beach holidays, most visitors head south.

Temperatures in the south hover between 18°C in January and 26°C in August, though highs regularly push into the low 30s in summer. The sea temperature tracks behind air temperature, reaching its warmest around 23°C in September and October, and its coolest around 18°C in February and March.

Month by Month Guide

January and February

These are the coolest months, though "cool" is relative: daytime temperatures in the south typically sit around 20–22°C, making this comfortable walking and sightseeing weather. The beaches are quieter than in summer, and you will pay noticeably less for flights and accommodation. January is peak whale-watching season in the waters off Gran Canaria's south coast, and golfers love this time of year for the mild, dry conditions.

March and April

Spring brings slightly warmer temperatures and longer days. March can still feel fresh, especially in the evenings, but April is when the beach starts to feel genuinely inviting. Easter week (Semana Santa) draws a significant number of Spanish visitors, so expect busier resorts and higher prices during that period.

May and June

May is one of the most underrated months to visit. Temperatures climb into the mid-20s, the sea is warming up, and the high-season crowds have not yet arrived. June is similar, though it marks the beginning of the busier period. Both months are excellent for water sports, diving, and exploring the island without battling for space.

July and August

This is the peak of summer and the busiest period on the island. European schools are out, and resorts fill up quickly. Temperatures regularly reach 30°C or above in July and August, and the sea is warm and clear. If you are travelling with children during school holidays, this is the obvious choice — but book well in advance and expect to pay premium prices.

September and October

Many experienced visitors consider September and October the sweet spot. The summer crowds have thinned, prices drop, and the sea reaches its warmest point of the year. Conditions for water sports, snorkelling, and boat trips are excellent through both months.

November and December

November sees the island begin to slow down, though the south remains warm and sunny most days. December brings the Christmas and New Year period, which is popular with northern Europeans seeking winter sun.

Best Time for Specific Activities

Beach holidays: July to October for the warmest sea and air temperatures; May and June for warmth without the crowds.

Water sports: May through October. Walking and hiking: November to April. Golf: October to April. Whale and dolphin watching: Year-round, though January to March tends to offer the best conditions.

Price Tips

Flights and accommodation are cheapest from November through February, excluding the Christmas and New Year period. For the best combination of good weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices, aim for May, June, or October.
