Gran Canaria in winter is a very different proposition from many European destinations. While much of the continent shivers through dark, cold months, the south of this Canary Island basks in mild temperatures, long sunny days, and a distinctly unhurried atmosphere.

Winter Weather in Gran Canaria

The key fact about Gran Canaria in winter is that it stays warm. In the south of the island — where the main tourist resorts are — daytime temperatures typically range from 19°C to 23°C between November and February. On many days it feels warmer than that.

Sunshine hours are impressive for the time of year: the south coast averages around six to seven hours of sunshine per day in December and January. The sea cools in winter, dropping to around 18–20°C by February.

What is Open in Winter

One of the great advantages of Gran Canaria over many other Mediterranean destinations is that the island is genuinely open year-round. Hotels, restaurants, shops, and activity operators do not close for winter. All major excursions and tours operate through winter.

Activities That Are Particularly Good in Winter

Golf

The golf courses of Gran Canaria's south coast are at their most enjoyable from October to April. Summer heat makes playing in the middle of the day uncomfortable; winter temperatures are perfect for a full round at any time of day.

Whale and Dolphin Watching

January, February, and March are excellent months for cetacean watching in the waters off Gran Canaria's south coast. The waters host resident populations of common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins year-round, and winter increases the chance of sightings of additional species.

Walking and Hiking in the Interior

The cooler temperatures make winter the best time of year to explore Gran Canaria's dramatic interior. The central mountains are much more accessible and enjoyable on foot when the heat is manageable, and the landscape is greener and more colourful.

Cycling

Road cycling is popular in Gran Canaria in winter, with professional teams often training on the island during January and February. Routes range from gentle coastal rides to challenging climbs into the interior.

What to Pack

Shorts, T-shirts, and summer clothes for daytime beach and resort use. A light jacket or cardigan for evenings. Trainers or walking sandals if you plan to visit the interior. Sunscreen — the winter sun in Gran Canaria is still strong enough to cause sunburn.

Why Northern Europeans Love Gran Canaria in Winter

The appeal is straightforward: reliable sun and warmth when home is grey and cold, combined with a fully functioning resort infrastructure that does not shut down. Many visitors come for several weeks at a time.
