Most visitors to Maspalomas come for the beach and the dunes, and understandably so — they are genuinely spectacular. But if your stay extends beyond a few days, or if you simply want to get more out of your time in the south of Gran Canaria, there is a lot more on offer than a sun lounger.

The Maspalomas Dunes

The Maspalomas Dunes Natural Reserve is a protected landscape of around 400 hectares — a genuine expanse of golden sand dunes, a freshwater lagoon, and a palm grove. Walking through the dunes in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the landscape almost empty, is one of those experiences that stays with you.

Camel Rides

Camel rides at the Maspalomas dunes are a perennial favourite, particularly with families. The camel station is located near the lighthouse (Faro de Maspalomas), and rides follow a route along the edge of the dune reserve.

Water Sports

Maspalomas and the adjacent Playa del Inglés are well served for water sports. Jet skiing, paddleboarding, kayaking, banana boat rides, and pedalo hire are all available along the beach.

Golf

The Maspalomas Golf Course is a mature, established course set amid palm trees and alongside the dune reserve — one of the most distinctive course settings in the Canary Islands. The winter months from October to April are when conditions are most comfortable.

Excursions from Maspalomas

Well-regarded excursions include: Roque Nublo and the Interior — a coach or hire car tour through the central mountains; Puerto de Mogán — the small, picturesque resort sometimes called "Little Venice"; Palmitos Park — a botanical and wildlife park; Las Palmas — the island's capital is around an hour's drive and a day trip is well worth making.

Markets

Puerto de Mogán Market (Fridays): the most famous market on the south coast, drawing visitors from across the island. Arguineguín Market (Tuesdays): a more local, less tourist-oriented market. Playa del Inglés Craft Market: regular evening craft markets.

Evening Entertainment

The Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés area has one of the most varied evening entertainment programmes on the island, from live music in beach bars to more structured shows and cabaret.

Nature Walk: La Charca Lagoon

The La Charca lagoon, within the Maspalomas reserve, is a protected wetland that attracts migratory birds. A footpath follows the edge of the lagoon and is a pleasant, quiet walk. Birdwatchers will find species including grey heron, little egret, and various waders.
