Puerto Rico is regularly cited as one of the best resorts on Gran Canaria's south coast, and it has a loyal following of repeat visitors who return year after year. It has a combination of qualities — a sheltered beach, a lively marina, excellent water-based activities, and a compact, walkable layout — that is hard to match anywhere else on the coast.

Where is Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico sits on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria, approximately 35 km from the airport and about 12 km west of Maspalomas. It is set in a natural bay surrounded by steep hills, which gives the resort its distinctive bowl-shaped geography.

The Beach

Puerto Rico's main beach is one of the best on the south coast for families. The bay is naturally sheltered from swell, and the water is calm, clear, and shallow enough for young children to paddle safely. The beach is well maintained, with sunbeds and parasols for hire.

The Marina

Puerto Rico's marina is arguably the heart of the resort and a big part of what sets it apart. Boat trips available from Puerto Rico marina include dolphin and whale watching excursions, glass-bottom boat tours, fishing trips, catamaran and sailing trips along the south coast, and private boat charter.

Family Appeal

Puerto Rico is widely regarded as one of the most family-friendly resorts on Gran Canaria's south coast. The combination of a calm, sheltered beach, a wide range of child-friendly boat trips and water activities, and a compact layout all contribute to that reputation.

Nightlife

Puerto Rico's nightlife is present but not overwhelming. There is a reasonable selection of bars and restaurants open into the night. But this is not Playa del Inglés — if a high-energy club scene is your priority, you may find Puerto Rico too quiet.

Honest Assessment

Puerto Rico deserves its reputation as one of the best-rounded resorts on Gran Canaria's south coast. Its strengths are clear: a calm, family-friendly beach, an outstanding marina and water-activity offering, and a compact and walkable layout. For families, water-sports enthusiasts, and visitors who want a manageable, enjoyable base with good access to boat trips and excursions, Puerto Rico is hard to fault.
