Quick answer: Playa de Amadores is a sheltered, man-made beach of white sand and calm turquoise water in the south-west of Gran Canaria, about 1 km from Puerto Rico. It is around 488 metres long, has held Blue Flag status since 2004, and offers sunbeds, parasols, showers, toilets, restaurants and accessible bathing.

Amadores is one of our favourite beaches on the island, and not just for swimming. When the sun goes down over the Atlantic, the colours over the bay are spectacular. Here is everything you need to plan a day there.

Why is the water so calm?

Amadores is protected by two breakwaters, which is why the sea here is usually calm and gentle. That makes it one of the best beaches in Gran Canaria for families with young children, nervous swimmers and anyone who wants a relaxing float in clear water.

Facilities at Amadores beach

  • Sunbed and parasol hire along the whole beach

  • Showers and toilets near the entrance

  • Restaurants, cafés and shops on the promenade behind the sand

  • Paid parking nearby

  • Accessible facilities including amphibious chairs, handrails and marked swimming areas

Walking from Puerto Rico

A seafront promenade of about 1 km links Amadores with Puerto Rico. It is an easy, scenic walk with views over the cliffs and the sea, and it takes around 15 to 20 minutes at a gentle pace. Many people stay in Puerto Rico and walk over for the day.

Best time to visit

Amadores is sunny most of the year. Arrive before 10.30am in high season if you want a sunbed near the water. For photographers, the hour before sunset is magic: the sun drops into the sea to the west and the sky turns orange, pink and finally deep blue.

Things to do nearby

Puerto Rico harbour, a short walk away, is the main departure point for dolphin-watching cruises, sailing trips and jet ski tours in the south. Mogán Mall is a few minutes up the hill, and Puerto de Mogán is around 15 minutes away by car or bus.
