Gran Canaria is one of the best family holiday destinations in Europe, and it earns that reputation for good reason. The south coast offers sheltered, calm beaches perfect for young children, the weather is warm and reliable almost all year round, and the range of activities — from water parks to boat trips to camel rides — gives families plenty to keep everyone happy across a full week or two.

Best Resorts for Families

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés

The biggest resort area on the south coast, with a vast beach, the famous dunes, and a wide range of restaurants and shops. The beach here is long and open, which gives children plenty of room to run, though it can get busy in peak season.

Puerto Rico

Many families consider Puerto Rico the most family-friendly resort on the island. The beach is set in a sheltered bay, which means calm, shallow water ideal for small children. The marina is the departure point for dolphin and whale watching trips, glass-bottom boat tours, and other water-based excursions.

Puerto de Mogán

Often described as the prettiest resort on the island, Puerto de Mogán has a small, sheltered beach, a pretty marina, and a picturesque village centre. The beach is calm and the bay is sheltered, making it excellent for younger swimmers.

Amadores

Amadores is a purpose-built resort with an arc-shaped, imported golden-sand beach and very calm, protected water. It is one of the best beaches on the island for young children.

Best Activities for Families

Dolphin and Whale Watching

Gran Canaria's south coast waters are home to resident populations of common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, and pilot whale sightings are common. Boat trips depart regularly from Puerto Rico marina. Children generally love these trips.

Water Parks

The south of Gran Canaria has a couple of well-equipped water parks with slides, wave pools, and dedicated children's areas. These are a reliable half-day or full-day activity when the children need a change from the beach.

Camel Rides at the Maspalomas Dunes

Camel rides along the edge of the Maspalomas dunes are a classic Gran Canaria family experience. Rides are short and well managed, and young children find them memorable.

Glass-Bottom Boat Trips

Glass-bottom boat trips are a popular and accessible family activity. Children can observe sea life beneath the boat without getting wet, and the trips typically last one to two hours.

When to Go with Children

If you are restricted to school holidays, July and August are the obvious choices. The Christmas and New Year period is popular with families seeking winter sun. For the best balance of good weather, comfortable beach temperatures, and fewer crowds, May, June, and October are excellent options if you have flexibility.
